Srinagar, July 19 (JKNS): The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) on Sunday informed that Jammu and Kashmir is likely to face a power deficit of around 1,000 MW following the shutdown of two major hydroelectric projects, Baglihar and Salal, for flushing and maintenance operations.
According to a public notice issued by KPDCL, as per news agency JKNS, a significant portion of the Valley’s electricity demand during the summer months is met through the Baglihar Hydroelectric Project (HEP) and Salal Hydroelectric Project (HEP).
The notice said flushing operations at Baglihar HEP will commence from 10:00 PM on July 19, resulting in a shutdown expected to last four to five days. The load from the project will be gradually reduced from 3:00 PM, while the plant is scheduled to be completely shut down by 7:30 PM on Sunday.
KPDCL further stated that Salal HEP has already remained under shutdown since July 18 as part of a 10-day planned maintenance programme.
The simultaneous shutdown of both projects is expected to create a power shortfall of approximately 1,000 MW across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The power utility said efforts are underway to bridge the deficit through short-term power procurement from the power exchange. However, it cautioned that the remaining gap may require forced power curtailments in different areas.
KPDCL has appealed to consumers to extend their cooperation during the period and use electricity judiciously until normal power generation resumes. (JKNS)
