The minister’s remarks came in response to criticism by PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, who had recently referred to her as a “12th pass minister,” sparking a political debate.

Addressing a gathering at Government Degree College for Women Baramulla, as per news agency JKNS, Itoo said she had studied up to higher secondary level and later enrolled for MBBS, which she could not complete due to certain circumstances. She termed the phase as a difficult period in her life and said she had not initially intended to enter politics.

The minister said she joined public life following the demise of her father, adding that circumstances compelled her to take up responsibilities. She said people supported her despite her lack of experience at the time and credited National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah for guiding her in her political journey.

Raising concerns over gender bias, Itoo said women in politics often face scrutiny on issues that are otherwise ignored in the case of male leaders. She added that several ministers in the past were not questioned about their qualifications, terming such criticism as selective.

Meanwhile, the minister also strongly condemned the use of abusive language against women on social media, stating that such behaviour reflects the “failure” and “weakness” of those indulging in it.

She said while criticism and discussion are part of democracy, the use of foul language on platforms like Facebook is unacceptable. “If you want to criticise, come forward and discuss. We are ready for dialogue, but abusive language is not acceptable,” she said.

Itoo also stressed that respect for women is deeply rooted in society and called for an end to such practices, urging people to maintain dignity in public discourse. (JKNS)
