Srinagar, Sep 13 (JKNS): Senior BJP leader and BJP J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur on Sunday described the BRICS nations’ condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and cross-border terrorism as a major diplomatic victory for India, saying the development represented a setback for Pakistan and a warning to those sponsoring terrorism.

“BRICS nations condemning the Pahalgam terror attack and cross-border terrorism is a big win for India and its foreign policy,” Thakur said.

He said the collective stand of the grouping demonstrated that India’s persistent efforts to expose terrorism before the international community had gained wider recognition.

“This is a defeat for Pakistan’s propaganda and a warning to those who believe they can use terrorism as an instrument of state policy. The world is increasingly unwilling to accept double standards on terrorism,” he said.

Thakur said the acceptance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a stronger, more cooperative and secure Global South reflected India’s growing diplomatic influence.

“PM Modi’s vision is gaining acceptance across the world. India being seen as the best bet for BRICS is a diplomatic achievement. Our country’s economic strength, democratic credentials and strategic importance have given it a central role in shaping the future of the grouping,” he said.

He said the BRICS declaration sent a clear message that terrorism could not be justified under any pretext and that those involved in terror activities and their support networks must be held accountable.

The BRICS New Delhi Declaration, adopted on September 12, strongly condemned the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed and many others injured. The declaration reaffirmed the grouping’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terror financing and safe havens. It called for zero tolerance towards terrorism and rejected double standards in countering terror.

The declaration’s adoption is significant as BRICS brings together major emerging economies with diverse geopolitical interests. China, a close strategic partner of Pakistan, was among the members of the grouping that endorsed the declaration.

BRICS, originally formed as BRIC in 2001 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, evolved into a formal grouping with South Africa joining in 2010. Its membership has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The bloc has emerged as an important platform for economic cooperation, political dialogue and advancing the interests of the Global South.
India’s leadership of the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi provided an important platform for advancing its priorities, including counter-terrorism cooperation, greater representation for developing countries and reforms in international institutions.

Thakur said the BRICS position strengthened India’s resolve to pursue a firm and globally coordinated approach against terrorism, adding that the international community must remain united against forces threatening peace and stability. (JKNS)
