Srinagar, Dec 7 (JKNS): The black bear that triggered panic across Srinagar for nearly 11 days was finally trapped on Saturday evening in the Nigeen area, officials said.

Wildlife officials told news agency JKNS that the bear walked into a cage installed near Nigeen Lake after days of coordinated surveillance using drones, traps, and ground teams.

“The bear has been safely captured and will be shifted to a forest habitat following a medical check-up,” an official told JKNS.

The animal had undertaken what residents described as an unexpected “city tour,” with multiple sightings at highly sensitive locations including NIT Srinagar, the University of Kashmir, SKIMS Soura, and later around the Nigeen belt. Its unpredictable movement had forced authorities to deploy additional teams across the city to avoid any human-wildlife conflict.

However, the operation is far from over.

Officials confirmed that a second bear, spotted earlier near Kashmir University, remains untraced, prompting extended searches through the night. “Patrolling and surveillance will continue until we are certain the other bear is located,” a senior Wildlife Department official told JKNS.

The department has urged residents in the vicinity of Naseem Bagh, Hazratbal, and adjacent localities to remain cautious and report any fresh sightings immediately. (JKNS)
