Jhelum Water Levels Rise, Level Receding at Sangam; Officials Assure No Immediate Threat

Srinagar, Aug 27 (JKNS): Authorities on Wednesday said that water levels in River Jhelum and its tributaries have risen due to continuous rainfall, though there is no need to panic as the situation is under watch.

As per official data of the Irrigation & Flood Control Department available with news agency JKNS at 4:00 pm, the Jhelum was flowing at 23.99 ft at Sangam (alarm level 21 ft, danger 25 ft), 6.00 m at Pampore (alert 4.5 m, danger 5.0 m), 20.72 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh (alert 18 ft, danger 21 ft), 11.09 ft at Asham (alert 14 ft, danger 16.5 ft), while Wullar Lake stood at 1575.63 m.

Among tributaries, the water level was recorded at 8.22 m in Vishow Nallah at Khudwani, 3.14 m in Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi, 0.72 m in Lidder Nallah at Batkoot, and 1.71 m in Sindh Nallah at Doderhama.

Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif, as per news agency JKNS, said, “There is no need to panic. The water level will reduce soon, even in Srinagar. It may rise slightly till evening, remain stable for a couple of hours, and then recede slowly.”

Meanwhile officials told JKNS that there is no immediate flood threat, as of now water level at Sagam in South Kashmir has started receding while at Srinagar it is increasing but likely to recede by tonigh.

Official said they are continuously monitoring the situation and will issue further advisories if required. (JKNS)
