NEW DELHI – Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly condemned the opposition parties’ protests against the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, calling their actions “undemocratic.” In a recent interview, Shah alleged that opposition leaders were seeking to “form and run the government even when they are jailed.”
The Home Minister stated that the bill was brought forward at the insistence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is designed to strengthen accountability in public life. According to reports in an interview with a news agency, He explained that, under the proposed law, any elected representative who is sentenced for two years or more will be removed from their position as a Member of Parliament, in line with the spirit of the Representation of the People Act. Shah also highlighted that the bill uniquely includes the office of the Prime Minister under its purview.
Addressing the opposition’s decision to boycott the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the bill, Shah dismissed their actions, asserting that the JPC would continue its work regardless.
On a separate matter, Shah also responded to questions raised by the opposition regarding the recent resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. He stated that Dhankhar had resigned due to a “personal health problem” and urged the opposition to not “stretch the issue too much.”
