Srinagar, Aug 18 (JKNS): The much-anticipated Annual Plantation Drive for the year 2025-26 was officially launched today at the picturesque Manasbal Lake, marking a significant step toward ecological restoration in Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was spearheaded by Dr. Touseef Ahmed, a renowned environmentalist and climate activist, who has pledged to plant 5 lakh saplings across the region to combat environmental degradation.

The plantation drive for the year 2025-26 commenced with great enthusiasm at Manasbal today, marking a pivotal step toward environmental restoration in Kashmir’s vital water catchment areas. Dr. Touseef Ahmed, renowned for his commitment to green initiatives and his pledge of planting thousands of plants this year, addressed volunteers, dignitaries, and members of civil society at the event.

Rtn Jagjit Singh emphasized the urgent need for robust plantation campaigns amid mounting environmental challenges such as deforestation, soil erosion, and declining water quality.

He highlighted that catchment areas surrounding water bodies like Manasbal Lake, Dal Lake, and Wular Lake require special attention to preserve their ecological balance and secure clean water resources for future generations.

Planting trees in these vulnerable zones not only protects the water bodies from siltation and pollution but also helps mitigate the effects of climate change. Our collective effort today will ensure a greener, cleaner, and healthier tomorrow,” said Dr. Touseef Ahmed.

The event witnessed active participation from various NGOs Rotary Club of Kashmir, EPG,Kashmir Concern, Forest Department Manasbal Range JK Action Forum civil society organizations, and educational institutions.

Faiz Bakshi Convenor Environmental policy Group (EPG) urged all stakeholders to amplify their engagement in community-led afforestation, raising awareness, and mobilizing youth for environmental stewardship.

The drive included interactive sessions on the role of native species in restoring biodiversity and protecting the fragile lake ecosystem. Volunteers distributed saplings across the Manasbal catchment, setting the tone for sustained action throughout the year.

The collaborative initiative serves as a clarion call for everyone policy makers, students, teachers, activists, and citizens to join hands for a greener future.

The plantation campaign will continue across the valley with special focus on catchment areas of Dal Lake, Wular Lake, and Manasbal, harnessing the power of community to heal nature and secure water bodies for generations to come. (JKNS)
