Srinagar, Sept 1 (JKNS): The rulling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) on Tuesday announced a peaceful gherao of BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu on September 2, hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party announced a protest march towards the Civil Secretariat against the NC-led J&K Government.
As already reported by news agency JKNS, BJP J&K has announced a massive protest march against the National Conference Government on Wednesday.
Party leaders and workers will assemble at Clock Tower, Lal Chowk, Srinagar, at 9:00 am, before marching towards the Civil Secretariat via M.A. Road at 10:00 am.
The protest will be led by BJP J&K President and MP Sat Sharma and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, along with senior party leaders.
Responding with its own mobilisation programme, the JKNC said it would peacefully gherao BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu, demanding accountability from the Union Government over commitments made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court of India.
According to the JKNC, its demands include constitutional guarantees, restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, clearance of the reservation file and justice for the people of J&K.
The party said the mandate given by the people of Jammu and Kashmir “is not a blank cheque” and must be respected rather than taken for granted.
In Srinagar, the JKNC protest has been scheduled for 10:00 am at Gindun Park, near Police Station Rajbagh, while a similar protest will be held in Jammu.
The competing protest programmes announced by the BJP and JKNC are likely to bring heightened political activity across Srinagar on Wednesday, with the BJP planning a march towards the Civil Secretariat and the NC announcing a counter-protest at BJP headquarters. (JKNS)
