Jammu, Apr 14 (JKNS): In a major push to infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre has approved construction of key tunnel projects on National Highway-244, aimed at improving connectivity in Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur districts.

As per details available with news agency JKNS, the approved works include the Uni-Directional Twin Tube Sudhmahadev–Dranga Tunnel spanning 12.85 km (including approaches) and the Twin Tube Singhpora–Vailoo Tunnel measuring 38.61 km (including approaches), with a total estimated cost of Rs 9,779.42 crore.

Union Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh termed the approval as a significant development for the region, stating that it dispels speculation about the project being shelved. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritising Jammu and Kashmir’s development.

 

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also welcomed the decision, calling it a major step towards strengthening connectivity and boosting economic prospects in the hilly districts.

 

In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving the Sudhmahadev-Dranga and Singhpora-Vailoo tunnel projects.

 

He said the projects will ensure all-weather connectivity, improve accessibility and accelerate economic growth across the Chenab Valley and adjoining areas. (JKNS)
