“Focus Is on Value, Not Volume”: CM Omar Abdullah Prioritises High-Spending Domestic Tourists for J&K

New Delhi, Feb 27 (JKNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said the Union Territory is not aggressively pursuing foreign tourist arrivals, instead prioritising high-spending domestic travellers as part of a strategy aimed at promoting sustainable and value-driven tourism.

Speaking during his visit to the South Asia Travel & Tourism Exchange (SATTE) at the Yashobhoomi Exhibition Centre in New Delhi, as per news agency JKNS, Chief Minister stated that J&K’s tourism policy centres on quality, sustainability and enhanced visitor experience rather than merely increasing international footfall.

Clarifying the government’s approach, Abdullah said attracting Indian travellers who are increasingly aspirational and spend significantly more remains a key priority.

“Our focus is to market Jammu & Kashmir across the country and ensure that every visitor leaves satisfied, feels valued and wishes to return,” he said.

Outlining the broader roadmap, he highlighted a strategic shift from volume-based tourism to value-based tourism. The Chief Minister also reiterated plans to develop nine new world-class and sustainable tourist destinations in collaboration with the Government of India.

Emphasising infrastructure development as critical to supporting all-season tourism, Abdullah stressed the importance of improved rail connectivity to Srinagar and expansion of airport infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir.

He expressed optimism that J&K Tourism’s participation in SATTE 2026 would help boost bookings and tourist inflow ahead of the upcoming travel season.

The 33rd edition of SATTE 2026 has witnessed record participation, with over 2,000 exhibitors representing more than 3,200 brands from more than 60 countries. Organised by Informa Markets in India, the travel exhibition has seen participation from nearly all states and Union Territories, showcasing diverse tourism offerings. (JKNS)
