Statement reads that, This will be the fourth consecutive G20 Summit held in the Global South. At the Summit, Prime Minister will put forth India’s perspectives on the G20 agenda. Prime Minister is expected to speak in all the three sessions of the Summit.

These sessions are on, Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth Leaving No One Behind Building our economies; the role of trade; financing for development and the debt burden, it reads.

A Resilient World, the G20’s Contribution: Disaster Risk Reduction; Climate Change; Just Energy Transitions; Food Systems. A Fair and a Just Future for All: Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence, it reads.

On the margins of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg. Prime Minister will also be participating in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting being hosted by South Africa, statement reads.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump said it is a “total disgrace” that the G20 is being held in South Africa, declaring that no American official will attend the Summit as long as what he described as “human rights abuses” against the ethnic minority group of Afrikaners continue.

Trump had announced that he would not attend the G20 Summit in South Africa, questioning the country’s membership in the group of major economies.

“It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners People who are descended from Dutch settlers, and also French and German immigrants, are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated,” Trump had said in a post on Truth Social.

“No US Government Official will attend as long as these Human Rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!” he added.

In February this year, only weeks after being sworn in for a second term as US President, Trump issued an order condemning South Africa’s “shocking disregard” of its citizens’ rights by passing legislation that allowed the South African government to seize agricultural property belonging to ethnic minority Afrikaners without compensation.

India hosted the Summit in 2023, which marked a major milestone with the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the grouping. The presidency then passed to Brazil, which hosted the Rio Summit in 2024.

South Africa now holds the 2025 presidency, continuing the Global South leadership streak.

G20 countries are, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States and two regional bodies, namely the European Union and the African Union.

Collectively, G20 nations represent around 80% of global GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the world’s population, underscoring the weight of these back-to-back presidencies in emerging economies.

India was the President of the G20 from December 2022 to November 2023 and had hosted the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.

It was under India’s G20 Presidency that the African Union officially joined the grouping of the world’s major economies as a permanent member. (JKNS)
