Srinagar, Oct 7 (JKNS): Parts of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed fresh snowfall in higher reaches and heavy rains in the plains on Tuesday, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures.
Gulmarg recorded the season’s first sub-zero temperature, while Zojila Pass recorded the coldest night at -8.0°C, marking an early onset of winter chill in the region.
Reports recieved by news agency JKNS, Sadhna Top received 18–20 inches of snow, Peer Ki Gali recorded 12–15 inches, Sinthan Top 14–18 inches, and Zojila Pass 6–7 inches. Popular tourist destinations including Sonamarg (2–3 inches) and Pahalgam (1–2 inches) also recorded light snowfall.
The ski resort Gulmarg shivered at -0.4°C, becoming the first Valley station to hit sub-zero temperatures this early in October. Pahalgam recorded a minimum of 0.6°C, officials said.
Fresh snowfall in Larnoo and Daksun areas of Kokernag caused widespread damage to apple orchards and power lines. Locals reported that several trees were uprooted under the weight of snow, disrupting electricity and road connectivity.
Weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng said that mostly dry weather is expected across J&K today.
Faizan said that, “A few areas may receive showers till afternoon, mainly in Kishtwar, Doda, parts of Anantnag, Ramban, Udhampur, and Kathua districts. Dry weather will follow thereafter,” he said. He added that dry conditions are expected to persist across the region until October 20.
Meanwhile, heavy rains in plains of Kashmir and Jammu.
Traffic and local authorities advised travelers to check road conditions before heading to high-altitude passes, as snow accumulation has made several stretches slippery and risky. (JKNS)
