Srinagar, Sept 23 (JKNS): The Group of Concerned Citizens J&K (GCC) has expressed serious doubts on the Government’s will and wherewithal in ensuring protection of rivers , lakes and other water bodies in different areas of Jammu & Kashmir.
Raising alarm on the reports of wanton unlawful interference with ANCHAR lake and Brar-e-Nambal lagoon in Srinagar, besides recent attempts of encroachment of Dal and Nigeen lakes on the North of NFR ( Northern Foreshore Road), the Group has appealed the Government to come down heavy on those involved and take all such steps as may be necessary to” rule out such unlawful interference with impunity”.
A GCC statement here today said that ” the need to assign ANCHAR and Brar-e Nambal to the care and custody of an appropriate Agency of the Government was yet again brought up in its meeting with CM on 1st Sept. We hope the seriousness of the matter is seized and an effective mechanism for protection of these and other threatened water resources instituted without further dithering”.
The Group has expressed dismay at ” indifference of the public at large , in particular of the local community, in helping prevent illegal interference with water bodies.”
The Group has meanwhile shared the media reports and video clips on such “rampant encroachment” with the District and Divisional Administration for corrective action. (JKNS)
