Srinagar, Sept 23 (JKNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the issue of banning books raises a wider question about the role of such restrictions in a democracy.
Speaking to reporters, CM Omar, as per news agency JKNS, said he had his own views on whether books should be banned or not.
“That raises a wider question of banning of books. And to what extent banning of books in a democracy is the way forward. I have my own views on whether books should be banned or not,” he said.
However, CM Omar said that under the present system, the elected government does not have the authority to decide such matters.
“But unfortunately in the current system, we in the elected government don’t get to decide these things,” he said.
He added that the government would have to wait for a change in the situation before taking a fresh look at the matter.
“Therefore we just have to wait for that situation to change. And then we will take a fresh look at what’s happening,” CM Omar said. (JKNS)
