Srinagar, July 31 (JKNS): The authorities on Friday clarified that the suspension of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is strictly for one day only (July 31, 2026) to facilitate urgent slope stabilisation, repair works and debris removal following heavy rainfall and landslides.

According to the official statement, as per news agency JKNS, the traffic suspension applies to all commuters and all categories of vehicles as a precautionary safety measure.

Continuous heavy rainfall since July 18 triggered multiple landslides and falling boulders along vulnerable stretches of the highway, making it unsafe for traffic movement.

Heavy machinery is required to carry out slope stabilisation and debris clearance, which cannot be undertaken while traffic is in motion.

The administration stated that an advance advisory regarding the highway closure had already been issued on July 30 to enable commuters to plan their travel accordingly.

Authorities further said that the concerned District Administration, along with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is working round the clock to restore the highway and ensure permanent road safety, while emergency response teams remain on standby.

The public has been advised to cooperate with the authorities, avoid unnecessary travel on NH-44 until the road is declared safe, and rely only on official traffic updates. (JKNS)
