Srinagar, July 3 (JKNS): The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 formally commenced on Friday as the first batch of pilgrims departed from the twin base camps of Baltal in Ganderbal district and Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag district amid elaborate security arrangements and improved pilgrim facilities.

Devotees began their journey to the holy cave shrine early in the morning amid chants of “Bam Bam Bhole,” with authorities clearing both routes to ensure smooth movement of pilgrims.

At the Baltal base camp, light drizzle brought down temperatures, but officials said the track remained fully operational. Authorities expect around 10,000 pilgrims to undertake the pilgrimage on the first day.

Baltal Nodal Officer Rahul Yadav said the district administration had made comprehensive arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Yatra along the 14-kilometre Baltal route.

“The entire district administration has made thorough preparations for a smooth Yatra from Baltal. Light drizzle is taking place, but the passage has been kept clear. We expect around 10,000 pilgrims today. Emergency shelters have also been established at various locations to accommodate pilgrims in case of adverse weather,” he said.

Meanwhile, at the traditional Nunwan-Pahalgam base camp, the first batch of pilgrims was flagged off under a multi-layered security cover provided by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and the Indian Army.

Pilgrims appreciated the arrangements made by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) and the administration.

“I have come for the first time along with my family. The police, CRPF and Army are very helpful. The preparations here are excellent,” a pilgrim said.

Another devotee travelling via the Baltal route said facilities had improved significantly compared to previous years.

“The facilities are much better than last year. The locals, Health Department and security forces are providing excellent support. I pray for peace, unity and happiness in the country,” the pilgrim said.

Authorities have deployed digital surveillance systems, RFID-based tracking and extensive security measures to ensure safe and smooth conduct of the 57-day pilgrimage, which is scheduled to conclude on August 28 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. (JKNS)
