Srinagar, July 2 (JKNS): Veteran artist, art activist and Chairman of The Kashmir Music Club, Srinagar, Waheed Jeelani has called for comprehensive reforms in the cultural institutions of Jammu & Kashmir, saying that these institutions require professional leadership instead of bureaucratic control to effectively preserve and promote the region’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Jeelani said that institutions such as the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Akashwani, Doordarshan and other government-supported cultural bodies have historically played a vital role in nurturing the Union Territory’s artistic, literary and cultural traditions. However, he expressed concern that many of these institutions are gradually losing their purpose due to lack of funds, excessive bureaucratic interference, the absence of professional leadership and an increasing disconnect from the artistic community.

He further stated that merit, transparency and a clear cultural vision must once again become the guiding principles of these institutions. He urged the Government of India and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to undertake meaningful reforms and entrust these institutions to experienced and professionally competent cultural personalities capable of restoring their credibility, dignity and public confidence.

Jeelani maintained that the future of Jammu & Kashmir’s cultural heritage depends not only on talented artists and cultural practitioners but also on strong, independent and visionary institutions that genuinely serve the people and safeguard the priceless cultural legacy of the Union Territory.
