Srinagar, June 7 (JKNS): Stressing the need for solidarity among women and greater youth participation in social transformation, internationally renowned gender scholar Prof. Diana J. Fox has said that women must support and empower one another rather than create obstacles for their peers.
As per news agency JKNS Peof. Fox, was speaking during an interactive session organised by the Women’s Studies Centre at Government College for Women (GCW), M.A. Road Srinagar.
Prof. Fox is Chair of the Anthropology Department at Bridgewater State University, USA, and is known for her work on gender justice, transnational feminism and the gender-climate nexus. She is also the Founder and Executive Editor of the Journal of International Women’s Studies.
The programme began with an introductory address by WSC Coordinator Prof. Sheba Drabu, followed by a welcome address from Principal Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq, who highlighted the importance of global dialogue on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
During the session, Prof. Fox shared insights from her academic journey and research experiences across different countries, focusing on contemporary gender issues and challenges faced by women worldwide.
She emphasised the need to address structural inequalities, promote equal opportunities and encourage self-reflexivity to better understand social biases and discrimination.
Calling for stronger solidarity among women, she said women should uplift one another and work collectively to break barriers instead of creating hurdles for their peers.
Prof. Fox also encouraged students to find their voice, participate actively in social discourse and confidently express their opinions on issues affecting society.
The interactive session featured an extensive question-and-answer segment where students engaged with the scholar on gender studies, global feminist movements, research opportunities and higher education prospects.
Faculty members and students from various departments participated in the programme, making it a vibrant academic interaction.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Umera Baba, while the proceedings were documented by Dr. Afreen Niyaz. The event was organised by the Women’s Studies Centre with support from the college administration and staff. (JKNS)
