Srinagar, May 16 (JKNS): Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday issued a clarification over his recent “cockroaches” remark, stating that his comments were misinterpreted by a section of the media and wrongly projected as criticism of the country’s youth.

The Chief Justice, as per JKNS, clarified that his observations during court proceedings were directed at individuals entering professions such as law and media through fake and bogus degrees, and not at the youth of the nation.

“I am pained to read how a section of the media has misquoted my oral observations made during the hearing of a frivolous case. What I had specifically criticised were those who have entered professions like the Bar with fake and bogus degrees. Similar persons have sneaked into media, social media and other professions. It is totally baseless to suggest that I criticised the youth of our nation,” the CJI said.

He further said that Indian youth remain a source of inspiration and pride, describing them as the foundation of a developed India, adding that he holds deep respect for the country’s younger generation.

The controversy arose during hearing of a matter related to designation of Senior Advocate, where the bench reportedly made oral observations regarding professional conduct, misuse of social media, and integrity within the legal profession.

During the proceedings, the bench had also raised concerns over allegations of fake educational degrees and suggested that verification mechanisms may be required in certain cases.

The matter concluded after the petitioner tendered an apology and withdrew the plea, which was permitted by the court. (JKNS)
