Srinagar, May 11 (JKNS): An all-party Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs on Sunday reviewed the progress of Smart City and urban development projects during a visit to Srinagar, inspecting several key infrastructure sites including the Clock Tower at Lal Chowk and the Jhelum Riverfront.

As per news agency JKNS, The visit was part of the Committee’s programme for 2025–26 aimed at assessing the implementation of urban development initiatives and civic projects in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials told news agency JKNS that the Committee members inspected various public infrastructure and beautification works executed under the Srinagar Smart City project. The delegation also visited Lal Chowk Public Square and Balidan Stambh to assess ongoing and completed development works.

Speaking during the visit, Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited, Fazlul Haseeb, said the delegation was on a three-day visit and would also hold review meetings in Gulmarg with senior officials present.

“This is a three-day visit. This is the Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Development. They will hold a review meeting in Gulmarg and all officials will be present there. Development is clearly visible on the ground,” he said.

During the review, officials briefed the panel about projects related to urban infrastructure, housing, sanitation, municipal services and public amenities. Discussions also focused on strengthening civic governance and ensuring effective implementation of flagship schemes of the Government of India.

Fazlul Haseeb informed the Committee about several Smart City initiatives aimed at improving public spaces, promoting pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, enhancing mobility and upgrading civic amenities across Srinagar.

The members of the Committee appreciated the urban transformation works carried out under the Smart City programme and stressed the need for sustainable, inclusive and citizen-friendly development in the city.

Officials said the visit provided the Parliamentary panel firsthand insight into the progress of Smart City projects in Srinagar and is expected to help frame recommendations for further strengthening urban infrastructure and governance in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
