Srinagar, Apr 2 (JKNS): Director Census Jammu and Kashmir Amit Sharma on Thursday said that the forthcoming Census exercise will be carried out in two phases, describing it as a significant national initiative backed by advanced technology and large-scale administrative deployment across the Union Territory.

Speaking at a press conference, as per news agency JKNS, Sharma said the interaction was aimed at creating awareness about the Census process, its structure and the role of the public. He mentioned that he could not attend the Srinagar briefing due to flight cancellation but had addressed a similar press conference in Jammu earlier.

He said that the Census exercise has already been activated at multiple levels in J&K, involving a massive workforce comprising around 25,000 to 30,000 supervisors and nearly 10,000 enumerators. He added that several officers have been designated as Chief Principal Census Officers, while nearly 220 officers are working in coordination to oversee the process.

Sharma further said the enumeration will be conducted in two phases, each focusing on systematic data collection. He highlighted that the process is being supported by modern digital tools such as house-listing applications, GIS-based mapping, satellite imagery and scientific block-level planning to ensure accuracy and transparency.

He said a Self-Enumeration facility has also been introduced through an online portal, enabling citizens to submit their details voluntarily. Urging people to actively participate, he said the portal is secure, user-friendly and designed for convenient data submission.

He noted that top constitutional authorities, including the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister, have already taken part in the Self-Enumeration process, encouraging wider public participation.

Sharma added that the Census exercise is supported by an end-to-end digital data management system, with information being securely processed and stored at designated data centres, ensuring proper validation and accuracy.

Emphasising the importance of the exercise, he said the data collected will play a crucial role in governance, development planning and policy formulation, and appealed to the public to extend full cooperation for smooth and error-free completion of the Census in Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
