Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Minister Sakeena Itoo, as per news agency JKNS, elaborated on the government’s steps regarding reservation and welfare measures in Jammu and Kashmir.

On the reservation issue, Itoo said, “Since the formation of this government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, several deputations and aspirants met the Chief Minister regarding reservation concerns. Consequently, the Honourable Chief Minister constituted a Cabinet Subcommittee tasked with submitting a report within six months. This work has been completed, and the report has been submitted to the Cabinet, which has approved it by majority.”

She explained the procedural changes under the Union Territory, noting, “Earlier, during statehood, Cabinet decisions were publicly shared immediately. Today, after the Cabinet approves an agenda, it is sent to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. Only then can we communicate decisions that benefit the people.”

Itoo further clarified the role of the Subcommittee, saying, “This Subcommittee consulted every class concerned with reservation issues. The Cabinet has done its part, and now the report is with the Lieutenant Governor. If opposition members raise concerns, they should address the authority responsible for final approval. The government, Subcommittee, and Cabinet have fulfilled their responsibilities.”

On social welfare initiatives, the Minister said, “Even after budget constraints, the Chief Minister increased marriage assistance from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000, and raised old age, widow, and disability pensions. In this year’s budget, a further 25% increase in disability pensions has been approved and is under process. We are committed to releasing pensions on time, unlike claims made earlier by the opposition.”

She added, “The government remains sensitive to the needs of the most vulnerable sections and continues to implement welfare measures under the Chief Minister’s guidance. This work is ongoing, and we aim to ensure that assistance reaches all beneficiaries in a timely and effective manner.” (JKNS)
