Dehradun, Jan 29 (JKNS): An 18-year-old Kashmiri boy was seriously injured after being allegedly assaulted by a group of people in the Vikas Nagar area of Uttarakhand on Wednesday evening, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said.

According to a statement issued by JKSA as per news agency JKNS, the boy was selling shawls along with his family when he was stopped by some individuals and questioned about his identity.

“After learning that the family belonged to the Muslim community and hailed from Kashmir, the attackers turned violent,” JKSA said in the statement, as per news agency JKNS.

The student body said the victim was beaten mercilessly with iron rods, resulting in multiple injuries. “His left arm has been fractured and he sustained serious head injuries. Blood was reportedly oozing from his head following the assault,” the statement read.

JKSA further said that the injured boy was initially shifted to a local hospital and later referred to Doon Hospital, Dehradun, where his condition is stated to be serious. “Other family members were also dragged, slapped and assaulted during the incident,” it added.

Terming the incident as “deeply disturbing,” JKSA said it reflects a “chilling example of communal profiling, intimidation and mob violence against vulnerable communities trying to earn a dignified livelihood.”

The association urged Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene immediately and ensure registration of a strict FIR. “All those involved must be booked under relevant sections of law so that such acts of hate and violence are not repeated with impunity,” JKSA said.

Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident and further details are awaited. —(JKNS)
