Srinagar, Dec 19 (JKNS): Fortified rice, enriched with essential micronutrients like Iron, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12, is emerging as an effective tool to combat malnutrition and anemia, particularly among women, children and the elderly, experts said.

They said as per news agency JKNS, fortified rice is similar to regular rice in taste, colour and cooking method, making it easy to include in daily meals without changing food habits. The added nutrients significantly enhance the nutritional value of rice, which is a staple food for a large section of the population.

Health experts noted that iron and folic acid present in fortified rice help increase hemoglobin levels, reduce weakness and fatigue, and play a crucial role in preventing anemia. The enriched rice also supports healthy growth and brain development in children, while helping pregnant and lactating mothers meet their increased nutritional requirements.

Regular consumption of fortified rice strengthens immunity, improves overall health and contributes to reducing malnutrition, they added.

Officials said fortified rice is being distributed under various government welfare schemes including the Public Distribution System (PDS), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and the Mid-Day Meal scheme, ensuring improved nutrition for beneficiaries and contributing towards building a healthier society.
