CM Omar drew attention to the visible impact of climate change on Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, particularly winter tourism hubs like Gulmarg. He said that shrinking snowfall and receding glaciers are realities that can no longer be overlooked, noting that winter tourism is directly dependent on snow conditions.

He urged stakeholders to adopt innovative solutions, including artificial snow-making and modern technologies, to sustain skiing and winter-based activities, while adapting to changing environmental conditions.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged that the tourism industry in the Union Territory has faced a difficult year due to several disruptions, stating that recovery requires collective effort and continued government support to ensure smooth and safe travel experiences.

Emphasising safety and professionalism, Omar Abdullah said adventure tourism must clearly distinguish between calculated risk and recklessness. He underlined that operators bear a responsibility towards the safety of tourists, who place their trust and lives in their hands.

Calling for diversification, the Chief Minister encouraged the expansion of adventure activities such as paragliding, hot-air ballooning and structured training programmes to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a year-round adventure tourism destination.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to work closely with ATOAI and other stakeholders to promote innovation, sustainability and safety, aiming to position adventure tourism as a key pillar of a resilient and progressive Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
