Baramulla Sheep Husbandry Dept Marks AMR Week With Major Awareness Programme

Baramulla, Nov 24 (JKNS): The Sheep Husbandry Department Baramulla on Monday organised a Continuing Veterinary Education (CVE) programme on “Anti-Microbial Resistance” as part of the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Awareness Week (18-24 November 2025). The event was held at the Veterinary Hospital, Chijhama, Rafiabad.

The programme aimed to raise awareness and enhance understanding of antimicrobial resistance in both humans and animals. Veterinarians, para-vets, students, farmers and representatives from pharmaceutical companies attended the seminar. The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Irfan Mohd Magray.

Subject experts delivered detailed presentations on various dimensions of AMR. Dr. Muneer Ahmad Dar (PhD, Veterinary Pharmacology) spoke on Antimicrobial Resistance, Impacts, Challenges and Future Prospects.
Dr. Asif Rasool discussed the Current Status of AMR in Veterinary Medicine and emphasised adherence to withdrawal periods for commonly used antimicrobials.

Dr. Saima Mushtaq highlighted the Impact of Antimicrobial Resistance on Zoonotic Diseases.
Dr. Rayees explained the role of Vaccines and Herbal Products as Alternatives to Reduce Antibiotic Use in Food-Producing Animals.

Students from New Era Model Public School Chijhama Iqra Fayaz, Aleeza Irshad and Uzma Parvez along with pharmaceutical representatives, also shared their views on the consequences of indiscriminate antibiotic use in animals.

District Sheep Husbandry Officer Baramulla, Dr. Showkat A. Ahanger, stressed the urgent need for responsible and judicious antibiotic use. He highlighted the role of veterinarians in preventive health, monitoring, AMR reporting, One Health implementation and policy support. He reiterated that this year’s WAAW theme “Act Now, Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future” demands strengthened surveillance and diagnostics.

Appreciation certificates and mementos were presented to the speakers, followed by refreshments for participants.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Irfan Mohd Magray. (JKNS)
