Srinagar, Oct 29 (JKNS): The Jammu and Kashmir government has said that several structural and non-structural measures are being implemented to prevent and mitigate flash floods across the Union Territory, including strengthening of flood infrastructure, early warning systems, and removal of encroachments on water channels.

In a written reply to a question by MLA Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, the Jal Shakti Department as per news agency JKNS, stated that flash floods are generally caused by intense rainfall and cloudbursts, and while complete prevention is not possible, the administration is taking consistent mitigation steps under schemes like Capex and NABARD.

The department informed that 22 automatic water level sensors have been installed at key locations along the Jhelum River and its tributaries, providing real-time data through the Kashmir Flood Watch website and mobile application.

It further said that flood protection works including construction of embankments, gabion crates, and spurs are being executed at vulnerable points, particularly in Jammu province. The Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) under ERA is also preparing a detailed plan on flood mitigation and river management for the Tawi River.

On encroachments, the department added that continuous monitoring and anti-encroachment drives are being carried out jointly with the Revenue Department and District Administration under the J&K Water Resources (Regulation and Management) Act, 2010. (JKNS)
