New Delhi: Addressing the concerns of Kashmir’s apple growers, who ar staring at severe losses this year due to floods and highway closures, Indian Railways today commenced the loading of fresh apples on two vehicle parcel trains, each carrying 23 metric tonnes, destined for the Delhi market.
This move comes as part of a proactive effort to ease transportation challenges and provide timely access to the capital’s fruit markets ahead of the peak apple season.
Starting September 13, a dedicated daily parcel train will run between Badgam in Kashmir and Adarsh Nagar in Delhi, facilitating the swift and efficient movement of apples and other perishable goods.
With eight wagons per train and the possibility of adding more based on demand, Indian Railways aims to offer flexibility to individual traders and growers, who can conveniently book space through the online portal www.fois.indianrail.gov.in, said a government statement here.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, union Railway Minister, announced the information on social media X, “With the Jammu-Srinagar line operational, the Kashmir valley has better connectivity. Railways is introducing a daily time-tabled parcel train from Badgam in Kashmir Valley to Adarsh Nagar station in Delhi starting 13th September 2025. Loading of 2 parcel vans carrying apples from Badgam to Delhi is beginning today.”
The Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway and Divisional Railway Manager, Jammu Division, are closely coordinating with the state horticulture department, fruit growers’ associations, and traders to ensure seamless operations and address evolving requirements, said the statement.
The daily parcel train is scheduled to depart Badgam Railway Station at 6:15 am and arrive at Adarsh Nagar Railway Station at 5:00 am the following day — ensuring fresh apples reach Delhi markets early in the morning for maximum freshness and competitive advantage.
According to the statement, on August 9, the first freight train carrying 21 wagons of cement successfully reached the Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir Valley from Punjab, marking a significant milestone in connecting the region to the national freight network. This development will accelerate infrastructure projects across Kashmir and reduce costs for citizens living in the Kashmir Valley. It underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to boosting economic growth in the region.
“The cargo services will be operational on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of India. This rail link was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in June this year. This rail link also operates two Vande Bharat trains between Katra and Srinagar, both running at over 100% occupancy. These trains offer passengers accessible, affordable, and comfortable travel while elevating railway transport to a whole new level,” as per the statement.
