Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday urged scientists and experts to harness nanotechnology for disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region, stressing the need for advanced sensor-based early warning systems to mitigate the risks of flash floods and landslides.

Addressing the inaugural session of the five-day International Conference on Nanotechnology for Better Living (NBL-2025) at the University of Kashmir, LG Sinha as per news agency JKNS said, “nanoscience has transformative potential across industries, healthcare, environment and disaster management.”

“We must establish a group of experts to develop more sensitive and accurate nano-sensors for flash floods, and soil-based sensors for Himalayan terrain that can predict landslides in advance,” he said.

“Such projects would prove to be “game changers” in reducing future disaster losses, Sinha said.

Highlighting the role of nanotechnology in combating climate change, LG Sinha called for innovation in nanomaterials to cut pollution in chemical manufacturing. He also emphasized that scientists associated with nanotech must contribute to the defence sector, particularly in manufacturing lightweight components to strengthen India’s self-reliance campaign.

LG further proposed devising incentives for academic talent in nanotechnology. “Our focus should be on developing and using Nano-Technology for the benefit of humanity. New innovations in nanoscale transistors, particles, materials and additives will hold immense importance in energy, environment, food, agriculture and electronics,” he said, expressing hope that the benefits will reach the common man.
