“The next 10–15 days are crucial as the monsoon continues. Advisories will be shared timely, and people must remain alert,” he said.

He informed that water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh have already begun to recede. “Our teams, including the Army, Police, SDRF, and civil administration, are working on the ground 24×7. Over 150 vulnerable spots are being closely monitored, and no breach has been reported in the Jhelum embankments over the past 48 hours,” Garg added.

On the issue of sand mining, the Div Com said embankment protection measures have largely held firm. “Water levels touched a 10-year high at some locations, but the strengthening works proved effective,” he remarked.

Garg stressed that caution is necessary for the next 40 days of the monsoon season. “According to MeT inputs, no major shower activity is expected before September 5, but preparedness remains essential,” he said.

He praised the SDRF, NDRF, and flood control authorities for their role, while also confirming that communication links were being continuously reviewed with BSNL teams engaged in restoration. “Water levels are receding, and there is no cause for panic,” Garg assured.

When asked about closure of educational institutions, Garg clarified that “the decision lies with the Education Minister and does not fall under my domain.” (JKNS)
