New Delhi, July 16 (UNI) Former Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor at Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, the university announced.
Justice Khanna, who served as the 51st Chief Justice of India, retired on May 13, 2025. Elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, he held several prominent positions during his judicial tenure, earning wide respect for his erudition, balanced judgments, and commitment to constitutional values.
HPNLU in its statement highlighted Justice Khanna’s longstanding association with the university, having earlier served as its Visitor. “His association has been marked by deep commitment to the cause of legal education and institutional growth. His consent to serve in this prestigious capacity is a matter of great academic significance and pride for the entire HPNLU community,” the statement read.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Priti Saxena, who had requested Justice Khanna to accept the role, said, “Justice Khanna’s acceptance to join HPNLU as Distinguished Professor marks not only a great honour but also a transformative milestone for the university. His wisdom, vast experience, and steadfast commitment to the rule of law will significantly enrich the institution’s academic and research endeavours.”
Known for his intellectual depth, humility, and dedication to upholding constitutional morality, Justice Khanna delivered several landmark judgments during his tenure in the Supreme Court, including those that strengthened individual rights and ensured greater access to justice for the marginalised. His academic inclination, clarity of thought, and unwavering integrity have inspired generations of lawyers and judges across the country.
The honorary title of Distinguished Professor is awarded to exceptionally accomplished and recognised individuals in academia. Justice Khanna’s appointment is expected to bolster legal education and research at HPNLU, offering students valuable insights from his extensive judicial and constitutional experience.
