In a dignified and ceremonious event, the Indian Battalion serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) witnessed a formal Transfer of Authority (TOA) as INDBATT XXV (Madras Regiment) handed over operational responsibilities to the incoming INDBATT XXVI (Grenadiers Regiment) on 4 July 2025.

The event took place at the battalion headquarters in the eastern sector of UNIFIL’s Area of Responsibility and was marked by exceptional military drill, the ceremonial handing over of the battalion flag and a show of disciplined professionalism that characterizes the Indian Army’s proud peacekeeping legacy.

The ceremony was graced by Gen Ricardo Esteban Cabrejos, Sector East Commander, senior military officials from UNIFIL, representatives of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), and civilian dignitaries including mayors, mukhtars and community leaders from the region. Their presence underscored the strong bond between the peacekeepers and the local communities.

Over the past year, INDBATT XXV, comprised of troops from the Madras Regiment, has upheld the highest standards of professionalism, engaging in robust patrolling, humanitarian outreach and civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) activities. Their conduct has earned widespread appreciation from both UNIFIL leadership and local stakeholders.

As the baton now passes to INDBATT XXVI, drawn from the elite Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army, the tradition of discipline, operational excellence and community engagement continues with renewed vigor. The seamless transition ensures continuity of UNIFIL’s mandate, reinforcing peace and stability along the Blue Line and within its area of operations.

In a significant milestone, the induction of INDBATT XXVI also marks the first deployment of a Female Engagement Team (FET) in the Indian battalion under UNIFIL. This pioneering inclusion underscores India’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in peacekeeping roles. The FET will enhance engagement with local women and communities, fostering inclusive dialogue, trust-building, and meaningful participation—aligning with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Speaking on the occasion, Brig Gen Ricardo Esteban Cabrejos, Sector East Commander, commended the Indian battalion for their professionalism, dedication and ability to foster trust among local communities. He expressed confidence that INDBATT XXVI will uphold the same exemplary standards.

The ceremony concluded with a marching parade, military band performance and a reaffirmation of commitment to the UN’s mission of peacekeeping.

India remains one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UNIFIL, and this transition marks yet another chapter in its distinguished contribution to global peace and security.
