Srinagar: In a landmark move aimed at transforming horticulture and apple farming in Kashmir, Dhanuka Agritech Limited—one of India’s top agrochemical companies—on Wednesday held a major program on “Scientific Management of Apple” in Srinagar. The event was graced by Dr. M.K. Verma, Director of Agriculture at ICAR-CITH, as the chief guest.
Addressing press conference here in Srinagar as per news agency JKNS, the day-long event, led by Dr. R.G. Agarwal, Chairman Emeritus of Dhanuka Agritech, brought together scientists, policymakers, agri-business leaders, and progressive farmers to discuss sustainable, disease-resilient and high-yield apple farming using science-backed technologies.
Dhanuka Agritech also unveiled a specially crafted product portfolio tailored for apple growers in Kashmir. The newly launched lineup includes solutions targeting challenges such as Apple Scab, red mite infestations, and premature leaf fall—issues that have long troubled local orchardists.
Among the major highlights was the launch of “MIYAKO”, a revolutionary miticide from Nissan Chemicals, Japan, for spider mite control. Other prominent products introduced were “DELIGHT” (Dodine 65% WP) and “CURSOR” (Flusilazole). Experts said this portfolio will boost crop protection and profitability, aligning with Dhanuka’s commitment to sustainable agriculture.
“India’s food and nutritional security depend heavily on horticulture, especially in regions like Kashmir,” said Dr. R.G. Agarwal. “Our farmers can triple productivity with high-density plantations. We must erase the term ‘poor farmer’ by ensuring prosperity through science, innovation, and strong public-private partnerships.”
Chief Guest Dr. M.K. Verma echoed the importance of scientific farming. “Kashmir has the right mix of talent, climate, and potential. With high-density apple planting increasing yields from 11 to over 60 tons per hectare, we must ensure quality, sustainability, and global competitiveness,” he said. He emphasized judicious pesticide use and integrated pest management, especially in light of evolving pest patterns driven by climate change.
Dr. Manzoor A. Parray, Head of Entomology at SKUAST-K, stressed the importance of pest monitoring using pheromone and sticky traps, and modern techniques like drone spraying to ensure safety and precision.
Appreciation for Dhanuka’s efforts came from various stakeholders. “We thank Dhanuka for providing both excellent products and farmer education. Their extension services are making a real difference in Kashmir,” said Dr. Mohd. Yusuf Zarger, Director, Cooperative Society Kashmir.
Dr. Nisar Ahmed Khan, a plant pathology expert, highlighted the on-ground impact of Dhanuka products like CURSOR and LUSTRE, saying they have become trusted tools in disease management.
As part of its larger mission, Dhanuka has signed MoUs with ICAR and 15 agricultural universities to support research and extension work. The company has also launched product authenticity campaigns using QR codes to curb counterfeits and ensure safety for farmers.
The event witnessed participation from over 150 delegates, including apple growers, agri-retailers, and representatives from ICAR and agricultural universities—marking it as one of the largest public-private scientific collaborations in Jammu & Kashmir’s horticultural sector.
