Jammu: In an innovative move towards digital policing, Police Station Bakshi Nagar has registered its first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) following a complaint lodged via WhatsApp.
An official spokesman here said that acting on a complaint filed by Nishant Kohli, resident of Bakshi Nagar, Jammu, police said that the incident occurred on the evening of February 26 between 7:00 and 8:00 pm when he parked his vehicle outside the JMC office in Bakshi Nagar.
When he came the next morning, to his surprise, somebody had stolen his auto’s battery, and as he was occupied and could not visit the police station Bakshi Nagar to lodge an FIR, he informed the SHO telephonically that he had attended one awareness program at Resham Ghar on new criminal laws by SDPO City West Jammu and SHO Bakshi Nagar, where it was said that an FIR can also be lodged through e-mail and WhatsApp messages.
In response to the complaint, Police Station Bakshi Nagar swiftly registered the e-FIR under relevant sections, he added.
This landmark step highlights the growing integration of technology within law enforcement systems, setting a precedent for faster and more accessible justice delivery mechanisms in the region, he said.
