Srinagar: The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Adil Mushtaq Ahmad, has rejected the bail application of Gurpreet Singh, an accused in a digital arrest scam that defrauded a senior citizen of Rs: 21 lakh.

“The case, registered under FIR No. 26/2024 at the Cyber Police Station, Kashmir Zone Srinagar, involves the accused allegedly running a “mule account” to launder money obtained through fraudulent means,” reads a statement issued, a copy of which is accessed by the news agency JKNS.

It also reads, the elderly victim was manipulated into prematurely closing fixed deposits worth Rs: 21 lakh, transferring the funds under false pretenses. During the hearing, the court was presented with substantial evidence linking the accused to the scam.

In rejecting the bail plea, the Hon’ble Judge remarked: “Cybercrimes like this are calculated and deliberate acts that exploit victims for personal gain, leaving them financially and emotionally devastated.”

The statement also reads, the court emphasized the wider societal impact of such economic crimes, stating that they pose a serious threat to public trust, financial stability, and welfare. Citing landmark Supreme Court judgments, the Judge noted that economic offenses demand a stringent approach due to their complex and far-reaching consequences.

“Assistant Public Prosecutor, Mr. Mohammad Lateef, provided compelling arguments, detailing how the accused coordinated with accomplices to operate accounts designed to obscure the illicit origins of the funds. He also highlighted the significant psychological distress and financial hardship inflicted on the victim,” reads the statement.

It also reads, this ruling underscores the seriousness with which the legal system is addressing the rise of cybercrimes. The court’s decision sends a strong message about the need to protect citizens, particularly vulnerable individuals, from digital frauds and ensures that offenders face severe legal consequences. The case serves as a stark reminder to the public about the increasing prevalence of digital frauds and the importance of exercising caution in online financial transactions.—(JKNS)
