New Delhi: Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged him to provide immediate relief to the calamity-hit people in Kerala.

Priyanka led a delegation of MPs from Kerala, including the Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, to meet the Home Minister to press for the release of disaster aid to the people.

During the meeting, the Congress general secretary highlighted the need for immediate assistance to help affected families, rebuild their lives and restore essential infrastructure in the region. She said the tragedy needed to be considered beyond partisan politics.

The Wayanad MP urged the Home Minister to urgently consider releasing the required funds to support the rehabilitation efforts in view of the severity of the disaster.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Vadra said, the delegation brought to the Home Minister’s notice the ground reality prevailing in Wayanad after the devastating natural calamity.

She said that a large area had been affected, so many people have been killed, with some families wiped out completely.

Priyanka said that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the disaster-hit areas, a sense of hope had risen among people that they might get central assistance. But, she added, they haven’t got any relief from the centre even after four months.

She appealed to the Home Minister that “We should rise above partisan politics and truly recognise the pain and the suffering that these people have gone through because the suffering is immense”.

“There are children who have lost every single member of their family. Who can they turn to, if they cannot turn to the government of India?” the MP asked.

The Congress general secretary said that the Home Minister has told them that they will be provided with the details of what has been done so far and what can further be done to provide relief to the disaster-hit people by Thursday evening.
