Srinagar: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced the season’s first coldest night with temperatures plummeting to minus 1.2°C on Friday, officials said.
The Meteorological Centre office said even as there was a slight improvement in night temperature across the valley, the minimum temperature recorded during the intervening nights of Thursday and Friday in Srinagar dipped to minus 1.2°C against the minus 0.4°C the previous night.
It was 1.3°C below normal for Srinagar during this period of the seasons amid the cold wave continuing to tighten its grip in the Kashmir Valley.
The temperature at the tourist spot of Pahalgam improved and was recorded at minus 2.3°C against the minus 3.2°C on the previous night. It was 0.1°C below normal for the valley of shepherds in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 1.4°C against the minus 2.0°C recorded a day ago, and it was 1.4°C below normal for the gateway of Kashmir on Friday.
The ski resort of Gulmarg, after recording a sub-zero temperature a day ago, dipped to minus 0.6°C on Friday, and it was 1.3°C above normal for the tourist resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Kokernag, the picnic spot of south Kashmir, had a low of 0.4°C against the 0.7°C recorded a day ago, and it was 0.3°C below normal for the place during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 0.8°C against minus 0.9°C recorded on Thursday, and it was 0.5°C below normal for the border district in north Kashmir on Friday.
The MeT office said the weather will generally remain dry till November 23 evening. There is a possibility of light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and scattered to fairly widespread places during the late night of November 23 to the afternoon of November 24.
The weather is likely to remain dry hereafter till November 30, they said.
On December 1, there is a possibility of another wet spell with light rain and snow over the higher reaches and at scattered places during late night of November 30 to forenoon of December 1, the MeT office said and added the weather will generally remain dry till December 5.
The MeT office has also issued an advisory stating that there is a possibility of the fall in minimum temperature by 1-2°C at many stations during the next 24 hours. Thereafter, there will be a slight rise in temperature during November 23 and 24.
It has also advised the tourists, trekkers, and travellers to follow the administration traffic advisory while undertaking their trips.
