Karnah, Kupwara: The valley of Karnah and the state of Jammu and Kashmir mourn the loss of a distinguished scholar and social figure, Professor Abdul Wahid Qureshi, who passed away on the night of November 16, 2023, due to a heart attack at SKIMS Soura Srinagar. Hailing from a religious and scholarly family in Karnah, Professor Qureshi was not only an economist and educator but also an intellectual, a respected member of the Pahari tribe, a lover of language, and a saintly person.

Born and raised in the remote area of Karnah, Kupwara, Professor Qureshi’s educational journey began at the Higher Secondary School Kandi Karnah (formerly Sher E Kashmir High School). He furthered his studies at SP College Srinagar before pursuing his master’s and Ph.D. in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University. At the young age of 26, after completing his Ph.D., he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Kashmir University in 1996.

Through his dedication, hard work, and integrity, Professor Qureshi rose to significant positions within the university, ultimately retiring as the Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University from 2004 to 2007. His tenure was marked by numerous contributions to the academic community and the upliftment of students. Following his retirement, he continued to serve the educational sector as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir from 2009 to 2012, earning widespread respect for his intelligence, capability, and honesty.

Professor Qureshi’s multifaceted personality was exemplified by his humility and simplicity. He was a beacon of support for the people of Karnah and the broader Pahari tribe, offering educational and intellectual guidance, and often extending financial support to students in need. His contributions transcended the boundaries of academia, touching the lives of many in his community.

Survived by his wife and three accomplished sons—one a doctor, another an engineer, and the youngest a college professor—Professor Qureshi’s legacy lives on through his family. His sons, all married with children, continue to reflect his values and dedication to service.

The news of his passing left thousands of admirers grief-stricken. His residence in Lal Bazar was filled with mourners who bid a tearful farewell as his body was transported to his ancestral home in Karnah. He was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard in Kandi at 4:30 PM, amidst a gathering of thousands of mourners. He was over eighty years old and had been battling heart disease for a long time.

Reflecting on his life and services, one cannot overlook the profound impact Professor Qureshi had on the community. He was a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration for many. His untimely death marks the end of an era, but his legacy of dedication, integrity, and service will continue to inspire future generations.

May Allah grant Professor Abdul Wahid Qureshi a place in paradise and bestow patience upon his survivors. His memory will remain etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him and benefit from his wisdom and generosity.
