SHOPIAN, OCTOBER 29: The District Development Commissioner (DDC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar today chaired a meeting at Mini Secretariat, Shopian with Rural Development Officers to discuss enhanced strategies for solid and liquid waste management under the Swachh Bharat Grameen (SBG) program.

The meeting focused on the deliberating modalities for improved waste management and disposal mechanism, alongside strengthening forward linkages to ensure sustainable outcomes in sanitation measures in the district.

During the meeting, DPO Shopian, Arshi Rasool apprised the chair of various successful working models in waste management, highlighting innovative approaches that have yielded positive results.

A detailed discussion was held on implementing similar models on pilot projects in selected panchayats within the district.

A large-scale Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign was proposed to promote waste management practices, along with the involvement of SHGs to facilitate the handling of polythene waste and composting activities.

The DDC emphasized the significance of behavioral change within communities and advocated for source segregation practices and the initiation of taking workable and feasible waste management initiatives.

He issued directives to implement mandatory guidelines for commercial units in the district including enforcing penalties and fines for non-compliance, with a one-week deadline for businesses to align with the new waste management protocols.

The meeting was attended by DPO Shopian, BDO Shopian and other officers.
