Poonch, 18 October 2024 — In a concerning incident on Friday, two daily wagers from the Power Development Department (PDD) suffered serious injuries after coming into contact with a live wire while repairing an 11kV line in the Sanai area of Surankote.

According to officials, the workers received electric shocks during the maintenance work, prompting immediate medical attention. They were first transported to the Sub-District Hospital in Surankote and later referred to GMC Rajouri for advanced treatment due to the severity of their injuries.

The injured have been identified as Mohd Farooq, 48, son of Faqir Mohd, a resident of Potha, and Mohd Khaliq, 45, son of Mohd Rashid, hailing from Sanai.

In response to the incident, the families of the injured workers expressed their outrage by blocking the Poonch-Jammu Highway at Sanai. They staged a protest against what they termed negligence on the part of PDD officials, demanding accountability and better safety measures for workers.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and address the concerns raised by the families. The PDD has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.

As the community rallies for justice and improved safety protocols, this incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by daily wagers in hazardous working conditions.
