The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India on Tuesday organised a one day Integrated Communication and Outreach Program (ICOP) on Swachhata Action Plan (SAP) in Srinagar. The awareness programme was organised by CBC’s Field Office Srinagar at the Community Hall of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) at Chanapora, Srinagar.

The outreach programme was organised for mobilisation and mass awareness regarding the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA).

Addressing a gathering of prominent citizens, officers and field staff of CBC and SMC, Sh. Nazir Ahmad Baba, Solid Waste Management Officer, SMC detailed out various initiatives undertaken by the SMC under SBA and Smart Cities Mission. He called for people’s active participation and support in ensuring the cleanliness of the city while giving a detailed presentation on the process of the collection, transportation, processing and proper disposal of the wastes generated. Sh. Baba impressed upon the people to keep the dry and wet wastes separate for SMC to treat the wastes accordingly.

Field Publicity Officer, CBC Sh. Shahid Mohammad Lone informed the participants about the objective of the awareness programme. He said that people need to be educated on how to handle different types of domestic wastes. He said that in house treatment of certain food wastes and segregation at the source will largely reduce the burden on the civic bodies and also benefit the households.

He said that people should religiously avoid single use plastics and turn to more durable and eco-friendly alternatives. Sh. Lone said that awareness campaigns serve the purpose of sensitising the people but the onus to bring about the changes at the grassroots level is on the people especially the youth. He said every change has to come at an individual level as envisioned in the SBA.

Others who addressed the gathering included Sh. Muhammad Sikander, Incharge CBC, Srinagar and Shabir Ahmad Akhoon, Ward Officer, SMC Chanapora.

Sh. Sikander in his address thanked the SMC administration for the support and coordination in organising the program. He expressed gratitude to the participants for taking the first step towards ensuring a cleaner society.

On the occasion, Swachhata Pledge was taken by the participants to show their commitment towards cleanliness. A felicitation ceremony for the SMC workers was also organised at the conclusion of the program.
