Power crisis surge ahead of winter season

Srinagar, Nov 10, KNT: Electricity has started playing hide and seek as winter is approaching in Kashmir Valley. Almost every locality in Valley is reeling under darkness for hours together. Netizens have started giving vent to their frustration on social media networking sites saying social media is the only platform where they can raise the issue related to power cuts as nobody from the administration listens to them.

“Whenever I call any officer trying to know the reason behind the unscheduled long power cuts, only answer I on daily basis get is that there is a fault and they are on it,” wrote a netizen from Mehjoor Nagar area of Srinagar.

Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has been resorting to unscheduled power cuts in both metered as well as non-metered areas, much disappointment of the consumers who despite paying hefty power bills face huge inconvenience.

“During election period every party promised to improve power supply in Kashmir but this time scene is totally different. Kashmir being politically mute has been left on the mercy of God. We don’t know whom to approach and how to raise our voice,” Javid Ahmed from Zainakote area of Srinagar outskirts told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

There are scores of areas reeling under darkness due to want of power transformers. Power crisis in Valley has become a natural phenomenon and a new normal.

From North to South Kashmir, consumers are complaining about frequent power cuts mostly during the peak hours.

People from Central Kashmir Budgam and Srinagar, North Kashmir’s Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts are claiming that the power cuts have intensified for the last two weeks due to which they have to spend maximum hours in darkness. The problem is severe in villages, where the consumers face prolonged curtailments without any announcement of the schedule.

When contacted a PDD official came up with the same ‘supply and demand’ theory, but claimed that power is being supplied as per schedule. (KNT)
