CUK’s SoE holds seminar to observe anti-corruption day

Ganderbal, Dec 9: School of Education (SoE), Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Thursday organised a national seminar on “Corruption Free Society: Role and Responsibility,” to observe the International Anti-Corruption Day, at varsity’s Green Campus here.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Shah said the corruption is of two kinds individual (personal) and that in the system (Institutional). He further said the religion should never be interlinked with corruption. Moreover, he gave examples of certain initiatives launched by the Government of India including GeM, e-Governance, DBT to curb the corruption in procurements and transactions.

In his keynote address, Dean, Faculty of Law, Jammu University, Prof. Kulwant Singh highlighted that “political corruption” hinders the progress of the nation and adversely affects the democratic set up. He added that corruption is universal and age-old which is followed by general ignorance, lack of vigilance, lack of awareness and non-active role of mass media. He further added that corruption is a slow poison which kills society, institutions, and democracy.

Chief Vigilance Officer, CUK, Prof. Wali Mohmad Shah said that it is the responsibility of every individual to curb the menace of corruption. He added that corruption is not only about taking money, but if a teacher is not attending classes regularly or on time, that is also a form of corruption. He called for awareness regarding corruption and ways to curb it.

Controller of Examinations and Dean School of Legal Studies, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir gave some figures including the WHO report on Happiness index wherein India is ranked at 39th position. He highlighted that indulging in corruption and malpractices is a huge sin in any religion.

Dean School of Media Studies and Director MPRC, Prof. Shahid Rasool said corruption is not only to take money from someone, but it also includes not performing and completing the assigned job. He further added corruption is everywhere in society and needs to be eliminated immediately.

In his welcome address by Dean SoE, Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani highlighted the role of teachers and the teacher education department in curbing the corruption. He appreciated the contractual faculty and scholars for their efforts in conducting the event successfully.

The inaugural session was conducted by Dr. Hafsah Jan while as Asst Prof. Ms. Shagufta Rehman proposed the vote of thanks. The session was followed by a technical session in which the scholars and students presented 15 papers on the seminar theme.
