Srinagar, Nov 29: An octogenarian died of ‘suffocation’ in a fire incident at their house in the Kawdara area of Srinagar in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, officials said.
As per the Fire & Emergency official, the minor fire broke out in the house of Fayaz Ahmad Najar son of Abdul Rehman, resulting in the death of the octogenarian.
The official said “the bed of the lady caught fire and she fell unconscious”. She was later moved to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. The official identified the deceased lady as Raja Begum (83) wife of Abdul Rehman resident of Kawdara.
He added, soon after they received a call, fire tenders were pressed to spot to douse the flames, however, while reaching the spot the fire was brought under control easily.
Meanwhile, speaking to Rising Kashmir, Divisional Fire Officer (DFO) Bashir Ahmad while confirming the death of a lady due to suffocation, said the maximum fire incidents in the city are taking place due to short circuits.
Ahmad said that people are hooking the electric wires which cause fire incidents. He asked people to avoid “hooking”, especially during night hours. He said that 95 per cent of the fire incidents are taking place due to electricity short circuits.
