A 27-year-old man absconded after allegedly poisoning his three children by mixing rat poison in their ice cream in Mumbai’s suburban Mankhurd, police said on Wednesday.

Following a dispute with his wife Nazia Begum, the accused Ali Naushad Ansari took the three children — two boys and one girl — out, promising them ice cream and allegedly gave them poison.

While the six-year-old Alishan died, his two siblings were hospitalised.

The incident took place on June 25 but came to light on Tuesday when Alishan died at the government-run Sion Hospital and the doctors informed the suburban Mankhurd police, said an official.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered against Ansari, a daily wage worker who is a resident of Sathe Nagar in Mankhurd.

However, Ansari has been absconding since then, the official said.
In her statement to the police, Begum said that the couple used to often fight over money-related issues, and on June 25, she left home and went to stay with her sister after yet another quarrel. Ansari then took the three children out for an ice-cream and allegedly mixed them with poison.

Later, when her kids started complaining of stomach pains, Nazia, who had returned home in the meanwhile, took them to Sion Hospital, police said.

Initially, Nazia lied to the doctors that the children consumed rat poison accidentally, but after her son died, she revealed the truth to the police.

Police have also recorded the statements of the two surviving kids who are recovering in the hospital, the official said.
