Kupwara (J&K) September 01 (JKNS): Machil Valley in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district is emerging as a new border tourism destination, drawing visitors with its scenic mountains, pristine landscapes and unexplored natural beauty, while locals hope the growing tourist footfall will create jobs and boost the local economy.
Located close to the Line of Control, Machil has witnessed increasing tourist interest in recent times. Residents have welcomed the visitors and said tourism could open new avenues of livelihood for local families, youth, women and small businesses.
The Indian Army has also taken initiatives to promote tourism in the remote border area, including establishing Naaz-e-Hind and Zulu Cafe at Zamindar Khan Gali, popularly known as Z-Gali, and encouraging local residents to develop homestays and visitor friendly facilities.
Local resident Habibullah Hurray told that the growing tourism activity has brought fresh hope to the community.
“First of all, I would like to thank the administration, the government and the Indian Army for promoting tourism in Machil Valley. Their efforts have encouraged local people and given us hope that tourism will grow further,” Hurray said.
He said the increase in tourist arrivals would benefit homestay owners, transporters, shopkeepers and other local businesses.
“Many families are preparing their homes as homestays. Tourism is also creating opportunities for women and young people. We hope Machil Lake and the entire valley develop into a major tourist destination, creating employment for local youth and strengthening the local economy,” he added.
Abdul Jabbar Baba, a resident of Pushwari village, said Machil has the potential to develop into a major border tourism destination like Keran, Tangdhar, Gurez and Bangus.
“We are very happy that tourism is gaining momentum in Machil. We want more tourists from across the country and Jammu and Kashmir to visit this area,” Baba told .
He said the valley has several unexplored attractions, including streams, plains and scenic locations.
“From Korgai to Ringbala, Dappal and Misri Baig, every place has something beautiful to offer. The government should develop the necessary infrastructure and facilities so tourists can easily explore these areas,” he said.
Baba also appreciated the Indian Army for encouraging tourism and supporting local communities.
“The Army continuously encourages us to keep our areas clean and tourist friendly. Homestays are now available in Machil and Pushwari, which can provide an additional source of income for local families,” he said.
A local tourist, Kabeer Geelani, who visited Machil for the first time, said the valley had impressed him with its natural beauty, culture and hospitality.
“We visited Machil Sector for the first time and were truly impressed by its breathtaking beauty, local culture and warm hospitality. Machil, also known as the ‘Aloo Village’, has immense potential for border tourism,” Geelani told .
He said the Indian Army’s efforts to support local communities through homestays and facilities at VTC centres were encouraging.
“Like Keran and Tangdhar, Machil is emerging as a promising tourist destination. I appeal to people from across the country to visit Machil, experience its beauty and support local tourism. Our experience here has been wonderful, and we would definitely love to come back,” he added.
With its picturesque mountains, lush green landscapes, streams and unexplored tourist spots, Machil Valley is positioning itself as an offbeat destination in Jammu and Kashmir, with tourism expected to provide fresh livelihood and employment opportunities for residents of the remote border region.(JKNS)
