Budgam, Aug 7 (JKNS): Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, while addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Beerwah, expressed deep concern over the growing social evils, moral degradation, drug addiction, alcoholism and other negative trends affecting society.
He said that these challenges can only be overcome through collective efforts, urging every individual to play an active role in reforming society.
The Grand Mufti emphasized that safeguarding moral values is the responsibility of not only religious scholars but also parents, teachers, educational institutions and every conscientious member of society. He said that issues concerning public welfare should never be ignored and reaffirmed his commitment to speaking out on matters related to the well-being of the community.
Referring to his earlier stand on the alleged sale of prohibited meat, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said he had received reports regarding alleged irregularities at a centre in Lal Bazar. He urged the concerned authorities to conduct an impartial investigation and take legal action if any violations are established.
Expressing concern over the conduct of some religious speakers, he said that the primary duty of Islamic scholars is to guide people in the light of the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), promote unity among Muslims, strengthen mutual respect and reinforce moral values rather than create divisions and discord.
He also appealed to parents to give special attention to the religious, moral and social upbringing of their children and to continuously guide the younger generation away from drugs, intoxicants and other social evils. Protecting youth, he said, is a shared responsibility of the entire society.
The Grand Mufti further urged people to adopt simplicity in marriage ceremonies, stating that extravagance, unnecessary display and excessive spending place an additional burden on economically weaker sections of society, whereas Islam teaches moderation, simplicity and ease.
Concluding his address, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said that the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) remains the finest example for all humanity. Referring to the Prophet’s mercy, forgiveness and message of peace during the conquest of Makkah, he said Islam promotes love, tolerance, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence. He called upon the people to work together to strengthen unity, mutual respect and high moral values in society. (JKNS)
