Srinagar, Aug 1 (JKNS): Srinagar Police on Saturday said it solved a blind murder case within six hours of the recovery of an unidentified body, leading to the arrest of a mother-son duo allegedly involved in the crime.

Police spokesperson in a statement issued here to news agency JKNS reads that, On 30 July 2026, Police Station Khanyar received information regarding an unidentified dead body wrapped in gunny bags lying in the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge, Khanyar.

Accordingly, FIR No. 49/2026 under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered, and investigation was taken up, it reads.

Considering the gravity of the offence, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers. Through sustained investigation and corroboration of available evidence, the identity of the accused was established as Haleema Bano and her son Moomin Ahmad, originally residents of Machil, Kupwara, who were residing as tenants at Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari, it reads.

After committing the offence, both accused fled Srinagar in an attempt to evade arrest. However, Srinagar Police meticulously pursued all available leads, relentlessly chased the accused, and successfully traced and apprehended them from Lolab, Kupwara, within hours of the recovery of the body, spokesperson said.

During the course of investigation, the deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal.

Investigation revealed that he was murdered inside the accused’s rented accommodation following a financial dispute. The accused subsequently disposed of the body in the Babademb Canal in an attempt to conceal the offence and destroy evidence, police spokesperson said.

Several incriminating articles connected with the commission of the crime have been recovered during the investigation. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of any other person and to complete all legal formalities in accordance with law.

The prompt detection of this blind murder case within six hours of the recovery of the body reflects the professionalism, dedication, and coordinated efforts of Srinagar Police in ensuring that perpetrators of serious crimes are swiftly brought to justice, police spokesperson said. (JKNS)
