Kupwara, Aug 1 (JKNS): In a significant breakthrough, Kupwara Police have arrested a habitual offender allegedly responsible for creating fear and panic across the Karnah sub-division over the past one and a half weeks through a series of criminal activities, including house trespass, robbery, assault, and other offences.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Nazakat Raina, son of Abdul Hamid Raina, a resident of Nawa Gabra, Karnah. His arrest follows an intensive investigation launched after a complaint was received at Police Post Teetwal regarding a serious incident that occurred during the intervening night of July 18 and 19, 2026.

Police said the complainant alleged that the accused forcibly entered the house, assaulted the complainant’s wife, snatched two mobile phones a Redmi and a Realme handset along with their SIM cards, and also committed an act of outraging her modesty before fleeing from the spot.

Following the registration of the complaint, the investigating team initiated a thorough probe. During the course of the investigation, technical surveillance of one of the stolen mobile phones proved crucial in identifying the accused. Based on the electronic evidence and other leads, police traced and apprehended the suspect.

During sustained questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to his involvement in the crime. Acting on his disclosure, police recovered both stolen mobile phones from his possession, further strengthening the case against him.

Subsequently, an FIR was registered at Police Station Karnah, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the accused’s involvement in other criminal incidents reported in the area in recent days.

Police officials stated that the accused is a habitual offender with a history of involvement in multiple criminal cases, including offences registered under the POCSO Act, highlighting his repeated engagement in serious criminal activities.

Kupwara Police reiterated its firm commitment to maintaining peace, law and order across the district.

The department assured the public that strict legal action will continue against individuals involved in activities that threaten public safety or attempt to disturb communal harmony and tranquility.

The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station so that timely action can be taken to ensure the safety and security of the community. (JKNS)
