Srinagar, July 2 (JKNS): The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Srinagar, has issued a summons to the Editor news portal directing the media organisation to appear before the Committee over the alleged interviewing and recording of a minor without obtaining the consent of the child’s parent or legal guardian.
According to the summon, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the Committee stated that it had taken cognizance of allegations that a child was interviewed and recorded by representatives of Fair Voice News without informed parental consent and without the knowledge or permission of the concerned school authorities.
The CWC observed that if the allegations are found to be true, such action may amount to a violation of the rights of the child guaranteed under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the media reporting safeguards issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) concerning the protection of children’s identity, privacy, dignity and best interests.
The Committee has directed the Editor/Authorized Representative to appear before it on July 2 at 2:00 PM along with the concerned reporter, the cameraperson or any other media personnel present during the interview.
The Committee has also sought a written explanation regarding the circumstances under which the interview was conducted, copies of the recorded interview and published or broadcast material, any consent or authorisation relied upon, and other relevant documents.
The summon warns that failure to appear or furnish the required information may invite appropriate action in accordance with law.
The summons has been issued by Dr. Khair-ul-Nisa, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, District Srinagar. (JKNS)
